If I’m not the
luckiest motorsport journalist ever, I’m still in good
company. This past weekend’s WestCoast SportsCar Challenge
was thrilling, with one car leaving the track and stopping
literally within touch of my outstretched finger… but I am
getting ahead of myself.
For the past
15 years, Gerry Frechette has been taking photos, writing
articles and reviews, and generally enjoying motorsport in
a variety of ways. He is probably the luckiest motorsport
journalist, as he will be shooting pix during Formula 1 in
Montreal. That he was on hand in Mission to do what he
apparently loves doing was fantastic, and I was able to
get a few tips on shooting the “ultimate” car shot. Thanks
Gerry!
Under the
auspicious of SCCBC, several classes of racing are
available to be seen at Mission. The WSC, CACC, ICSCC,
VRCBC… it gets all so CONFUSING! But with a bit of
perseverence, and a love of racing, there is lots to
follow in terms of road racing. The major event this
weekend was a 60 minute timed event to “get in as many
laps as possible”, the winner of course, driving more than
anybody else. After frenzied practice and qualifying
sessions, the actual race was somewhat anticlimatic, the
only heart-pounding action in turn 3 was a Honda Civic,
driven by a novice driver, retiring from a mechanical
failure quietly gliding up and stopping in front of my
camera lens. It wasn’t the shot of the day, let’s just
say. I am sure that every spectator there would agree with
me, that the open wheel cars, the vintage racers, and the
sports racers were the most fun to watch. A fantastic
event, and I’m looking forward to July 8 and 9 for more
racing action. See you there!
